Smart Engines has been granted a U.S. patent for its proprietary AI-driven technology designed to detect and verify security holographic elements in passports and ID documents in a video stream. The new method enables real-time authentication of identity documents with complex holographic elements using a smartphone. The newly issued patent marks the company’s 14th U.S. patent for its technological inventions.

The solution constructs a precise pixel-level map of security elements and identifies holograms across the entire document surface, regardless of their placement. The AI algorithms reliably distinguish authentic holograms from absent, fabricated, digitally altered, or printed imitations.
This technology is integrated into the Smart Engines ID scanning and authentication solution. It performs more than 600 security checks and is capable of identifying sophisticated forgeries, including deepfakes. It is already in use by banks, financial institutions, notaries, telecommunications providers, and other organizations seeking to prevent fraud.
The solution was tested using materials from MIDV-Holo—the first publicly available dataset of hologram-bearing identity documents—released by Smart Engines in 2023. The dataset contains 700 video clips, including 300 videos with authentic holograms and 400 videos simulating attack scenarios.
