Smart Engines, a developer of AI-solutions and a technological leader in the document recognition market, has participated in an initiative to restore forest areas damaged by the massive wildfires of 2022. Nearly 500 hectares of forest were burned during those fires.
To restore the protected area, seedlings of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) were used. These trees are well-adapted to sandy and sandy-loam soils and are more resistant to fire than other species. One hectare of pine forest can offset over 424.4 tons of CO2-equivalent over the project period. Smart Engines employees managed to plant a total of 4,000 Scots pine seedlings.
This is not the first reforestation initiative supported by Smart Engines. The company participated in similar actions in 2022-2023, thereby offsetting the carbon footprint left by document recognition systems for years to come.
Reforestation activities are part of the ESG strategy that Smart Engines formulated and presented in 2020. This strategy includes the consistent improvement of technologies to reduce energy consumption and a series of environmental protection measures. In the same year, Smart Engines joined the United Nations Global Compact.
All the company’s products – Smart ID Engine, Smart Code Engine, and Smart Document Engine – use the proprietary GreenOCR® technology with eco-friendly AI. This technology ensures the highest quality and speed in passport and document recognition while minimizing energy consumption and environmental impact.
