The Smart ID Engine can scan ID cards of standard ID-1, and ID-2 formats under ISO/IEC 7810:2019 regulations. Support of ID cards scanning includes countries of the: European Union; the CIS(ex USSR countries); South, Central and North America; Australia and Oceania; the Middle and the Far East, Asia, Africa, for a total of 169 countries overall. Additionally, the SDK can scan nonstandard (custom-sized) cards, including India’s Aadhaar and Russian internal passport. The Smart ID Engine automatically identifies the ID type, performs text field OCR, scans barcodes, and extracts graphical zones (signature, fingerprint, etc.) in mobile applications for Android or iOS; desktop applications for Windows, Linux, and macOS; web applications or server-based solutions. Automatically checks data integrity verifies the validity of a document, and performs face verification.
The scanning software does NOT transfer client’s data to third-party services and/or third parties for manual processing, does NOT save or store it — the scanning process is performed in the local RAM of the device, and it does NOT require internet access.
The SDK independently recognizes visual inspection zones on both sides of the ID card including text fields in national languages, barcodes, and a machine-readable zone (MRZ). It allows you to not only scan all the ID card data with high accuracy but also to control data integrity and check for signs of forgery. The face-matching technology of the Smart ID Engine allows you to verify the photo extracted from an ID document with a selfie to secure remote on-boarding and KYC procedures.
In addition to ID card scanning, the Smart ID Engine can scan permanent residence permits, temporary residence permits, work permits, and other residence-related documents issued both in accordance with the ICAO standards and local regulations. The SDK scans residence-related documents of the United States, the European Union, the CIS, the Middle East, Asia and Africa. If necessary, the scanning of ID cards can be supplemented with the scanning of bank cards, passports, driver’s licenses, and barcodes.

The Smart ID Engine ID card scanning software is delivered as a standalone SDK (software developer kit) containing an API for ID card scanning, all the necessary API descriptions, and integration examples for different programming languages. Developers are provided with the scanning API, which helps to integrate ID scanning into apps in C, C++, C#, Java, Python, PHP, Swift, and Objective C, and to optionally use the React Native and Flutter frameworks.
The Smart ID Engine SDK allows you to turn an iOS or Android-based mobile device into an ID card scanner. Our original AI algorithms provide high-speed and autonomous ID card capture not only in English but also in national languages (100+ languages supported). The Smart ID Engine SDK scans ID cards at different angles and performs with high accuracy under various lighting conditions. The SDK can scan an ID card on an iPhone XR in ~200 ms per frame.
Using WebAssembly (WASM) support, the Smart ID Engine ID card scanning solution can be integrated into all modern devices with installed browsers (Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Chromium, Microsoft Edge and Apple Safari), including smart TVs and consoles. The software does not require special applications or special plugins. The use of unique neural network architectures allows you to recognize video data obtained from low-end webcams with a minimum resolution of 640×480 pixels.
Deep software and hardware optimization of the algorithms for various processor architectures allows the Smart ID Engine to autonomously recognize ID cards on any PC (including nettops and all-in-one PCs), thereby turning them into high-performance workstations for entering and processing photo and video data obtained from image capturing devices (webcams, scanners, special document readers, etc.). Thanks to thread safety and efficient resource management, the Smart ID Engine SDK allows you to implement scalable AI platforms for automatic data extraction from ID cards and residence documents. Unique algorithms for automatic document identification and localization in images (scans and photo and video data) allow you to automatically process heterogeneous streams of input images. The ID card recognition performance on modern computers (with an AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X processor) reaches 45 images per second.
